Williams signs NFL contract

Ferris state football player Angelo Williams signed a free agent contract with the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings on Saturday.

Williams, a cornerback from Jackson, completed his four-year career with the Bulldogs last fall. In four seasons, Williams compiled 113 tackles and 23 pass breakups in 38 career games. Williams was named an All-GLIAC Honorable Mention following the 2009 season and participated in the Valero Cactus Bowl, which features the nation’s top NCAA Division II players, in Kingsville, Texas in January

The Minnesota Vikings signed 10 players after the conclusion of the NFL Draft and Williams was one of them. He is expected to attend a three-day rookie minicamp this weekend in Winter Park, Minn. The Vikings drafted Chris Cook in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday, but are still looking to add depth to the secondary.

Golfers earn GLIAC honors

Four members of the Ferris State women’s golf team have earned All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic honors for the 2010 season.

Ferris sophomore Bryce Hetchler earned All-GLIAC Second Team honors for the second consecutive year. Sophomores Blaize Baumgartner and Brooke Rodes, along with freshman Ashley Swanson were named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selections.

The GLIAC Women’s Golf Team was chosen based on the scoring average of the best nine rounds in conference competition. Hetchler led the Bulldogs with an 81.39 stroke average in 23 rounds this spring. Swanson finished second on the team in scoring average with 81.57 shots per round.

Baumgartner is fourth on the team in scoring average and tallied two top-five finishes this season. Rode’s has served as the Bulldog captain for the 2009-10 season and has a scoring average of 83.13.

Aquinas Invitational Results

The Ferris men’s and women’s track teams competed in the Aquinas Invitational in Grand Rapids on Saturday.

For the women’s team, freshman Alyssa Osika won the 800 meters with a time of 2:16.34. Senior Emily Cross finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and tied for fourth place in the high jump. Freshman Christa Cwiek claimed fourth place in the javelin.

Freshman Zoey Hohlmann finished second in the 400 meter run with a time of 58.52 seconds and junior runner Megan Josey earned a runner-up finish in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:42.60.

For the Bulldog men, sophomore Justin Price won the 400 meters with a time of 48.77 and finished fourth in the 200 meters, with a time of 22.57. Senior Greg Burns won the pole vault with a height of 15 feet, 1 inch.

Freshman Ryan Chute placed third in the 1,500 meters, while senior Brian Reynolds finished seventh in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:42.29.

Sophomore J.J. Vandenburg placed fifth in the hammer throw and senior Joe Leppek finished fourth in the pole vault.

The Bulldogs will be back on the track on May 1 at the Northwood Quad Meet.
