New student government president

Andrew Kalinowski will serve as the president of student government during the spring semester of the 2013-14 academic year. Kalinowski served as vice president last spring under Erin Williams, former student government president.

Kalinowski, a Ferris professional golf management and accounting major, was chosen by Williams to take over her role after she graduated in December.

Sports speaker presentation Jan. 27

Ira Childress will present his “5 Ways to Set Yourself Apart From the Competition and Land Your Dream Job in Sports” on Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. in BUS 111.

The presentation by Childress, a Ferris Alumnus and Okemos High School’s athletic director, is part of the Spring 2014 Sports Speaker Series.

Childress covered events such as the Super Bowl, NBA Finals and MLB World Series as a sports broadcaster and journalist. He was the assistant director for student-athlete affairs at the NCAA and also served as the key administrator for joint programs with the NFL.

Ferris professor’s poetry wins national contest

Ferris State University’s John Cullen recently won the 2013 Slipsteam Magazine Poetry Contest. His chapbook, “Town Crazy” is about the experiences he has faced while living in Big Rapids.

His book is available for purchase through the Slipstream website.

Cullen teaches in the Department of Language and Literature and has been employed at Ferris since 1984.

Ferris’ Master of Science in Nursing ranked nationally

The U.S. News and World Report ranked Ferris State University 24th on its list of “Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs.”

Ferris’ Master of Science in Nursing was found to have excellent faculty credentials, graduation rates and student services and technologies. Ferris tied with several other schools, such as the University of Central Florida and the University of Kansas, for the 24th spot.

Ferris alumnus starring in movie with Kevin Hart

John Kap, Ferris alumnus, will co-star in the upcoming film “Ride Along.”

The action and comedy film released Jan. 17, also stars Kevin Hart and Ice Cube.

Tim Story, who also directed “Fantastic Four” and “Barbershop”, directed the film.

Kap, former member of Ferris’ basketball team and a professional wrestler, is currently living in Atlanta and has been featured in a variety of television shows and other films.
