Too little, two late

Bulldogs score twice in final seven minutes, but lose in overtime

The No. 8-ranked Bulldog hockey team fell 5-4 in overtime to No. 12-ranked Northern Michigan in the CCHA Tournament semifinals.

Ferris junior Todd Pococke scored late in the first period to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Midway through the second period, the Wildcats ripped off three goals in 1:02 to take a 3-1 lead. Bulldog senior captain Cody Chupp scored to close the gap to 3-2 after two periods of play.

Trailing 4-2 with less than seven minutes left in the game, Ferris scored twice in 1:01 to even the game 4-4. The teams headed to overtime, where Northern Michigan’s Greger Hanson scored on the Wildcats’ first shot of the extra period to claim the victory.

In the second CCHA semifinal contest, Michigan knocked off top-seeded Miami (Ohio) 5-2 to advance to the championship game against Northern Michigan. The CCHA Championship contest will begin at 7:35 p.m. and will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit.

Ferris will square off against Miami for the fifth time this season at 3:35 p.m. in the third-place game. The Bulldogs recorded two losses and two shootout wins against Miami during the regular season.

Michigan is playing in its fourth consecutive CCHA Championship game and has competed in nine of the previous 10 title games. Northern Michigan is making its first championship-game appearance since 1999, when it lost 5-1 to the Wolverines.
