Bulldogs crowned GLIAC Champs

FSU men’s golf team earns first conference title since 2004

The Bulldogs claimed their first tournament win of the year by claiming the 2010 GLIAC Men’s Golf Championship.

The tournament, which took place at Grosse Ile (Mich.) Golf and Country Club, came down to a playoff between Ferris and Wayne State with both teams tied at 889 strokes after three rounds. Wayne State battled back from eight strokes down with six holes left in the final round to force a playoff, but the Bulldogs prevailed in the extra session to clinch the GLIAC title.

With the win, Ferris earned its 19th conference title in the program history and the first title since the 2004-05 season.

FSU senior Kyle Wittenbach earned medalist honors with a tournament-best 215 (+2). Wittenbach earned the GLIAC Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week honor for his effort. He took control in the final two rounds of the tournament, as he notched five birdies in the second round and added three in the third round.

Junior Ian Straayer claimed fifth place with a tournament total 222 shots, while senior Joe Brown finished in a three-way tie for sixth place with a score of 223. Fellow senior Garrett Simons finished the tournament with 229 strokes to garner a three-way tie for 18th.

Ferris returns to action on Oct. 9 as the team will hit the links at the Mohawk Golf Course in Tiffin, Ohio, to take part in the Tiffin Kyle Ryman Memorial Tournament.
