Ferris Student Dies

Ferris State University freshman and North Star, Mich. native Aloysius “AJ” Huss, 19, died in a single-car accident on Jan. 3.

The Gratiot County Sheriff’s Office reported that at approximately 12:30 p.m., Huss was traveling southbound on Baldwin Road north of Johnson Road in North Star Township when he lost control of his pickup truck, crossing the center line and hitting a tree. Huss was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The accident currently remains under investigation.

Huss was a Pfc. in the United States Marine Corps and completed his basic training in August 2010.

Gratiot County deputies, along with the Michigan State Police post of Ithaca, assisted in investigating the accident. Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Funeral services were held for Huss at Smith Family Funeral Homes Ithaca Chapel on Jan 7. In honor of Huss, the Ferris flag was lowered at half staff. Huss was a member of the United States Marine Corps. and Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Ferris student Elizabeth Hamming said she lived in the same residence hall as Huss. According to Hamming, Huss was very friendly to the people he came in contact with.

“He was a cool guy,” said Hamming. “He would always say hi whenever he walked by, even if he didn’t know you.”

Huss’s facebook page remains active and many students have written about how much he will be missed and what a good friend he was. n
