Ferris men's, women's basketball teams avenge losses

The Ferris State men’s and women’s basketball teams won Thursday night, marking the fifth time this season that both teams were victorious on the same day.

The men’s team defeated the Michigan Tech Huskies 70-60, avenging a three-point loss in Houghton earlier in the season. The Bulldogs outscored the Huskies 40-32 in the second half. Ferris connected on 17 of 20 free-throw attempts and shot 46.2 percent from the field.

Bulldog senior center Justin Keenan tallied 28 points in the victory, his second highest point output of the season. He also added a game-high 10 rebounds, completing a double-double effort. Ferris senior guard Matt DeHart dropped in 17 points, including hitting 5 of 7 three pointers.

The men’s team improved its record to 12-5 overall and 8-2 in conference play. The Bulldogs are second in the GLIAC North Division and sit one game behind Grand Valley State.

The women’s team took the floor following the men’s victory and earned the same result. Ferris upset the nationally No. 8-ranked Huskies 63-60 after trailing for most of the game.

The Bulldogs trailed by 12 in the second half and cut the lead to five points with less than 2:50 to play. Ferris junior guard Tricia Principe hit back-to-back three pointers to trim the lead to one point with 1:39 remaining and sank a pair of late free throws to seal the win.

All eight of Principe’s points came in the final 2:30 of the game. Bulldog forward Tiara Adams led the team with 19 points. Senior guard Becci Houdek added 12 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for Ferris.

The women’s team improved to 8-8 overall and 4-6 in GLIAC play. The Bulldogs sit fourth in the GLIAC North Division and eighth overall in the conference standings.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday with home games against the Northern Michigan Wildcats. The men’s team tips off at 1 p.m. and the women’s team tips off at 3 p.m.
