After a rough spring break road trip in Florida, the Bulldogs began GLIAC conference play on the road with mixed results, going 3-3 on the weekend.

Ferris began the weekend with a series sweep over conference newcomer Lake Erie on March 25 before splitting a doubleheader against Ohio Dominican on March 26. The Bulldogs finished the weekend getting swept by Ashland in a two-game series on March 27.

Senior shortstop Lynsay Weaver and junior first baseman Chelsea Morris drove the Bulldog offense in the sweep over Lake Erie. In the 7-2 series-opening win, Weaver racked up three RBI’s on a three-run homerun and sophomore starting pitcher Dana Bowler fanned six in a complete game effort.

“The GLIAC is really open for any team to win, including us. Every team is right there with the ability to win the whole thing,” said Weaver. “We feel that things are beginning to fall more into play for us a team. It is still really early and we will hit our stride when we need it the most.”

Morris took control of the second game of the series, as she blasted two home runs in the 7-1 victory for Ferris. Freshman pitcher Amy Dunleavy picked up the win to improve to 2-5 on the season. Dawn Ondercin took the loss for Lake Erie, allowing five hits and five runs in four innings of work.

Ferris picked up a 4-3 series-opening win against Ohio Dominican as junior designated player Allison Webber drove in three runs on the day to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 start in the GLIAC. But the Bulldogs got throttled in the next three games, dropping the series-finale to ODU 12-5 and following up with a sweep at the hands of Ashland.

The Bulldogs were out-scored 29-6 in their three losses on the weekend to slip to .500 at the start of GLIAC play.

“We feel that things are beginning to fall more into play for us a team,” said Weaver. “It is still really early and we will hit our stride when we need it the most.”

With a March 29 home double-header against Davenport University cancelled because of the continued presence of snow, the Bulldogs hope to start the home season on March 31 against Aquinas before starting a four-game home swing against Lake Superior State on April 2-3. n
