Stanwood wants to establish a topless bar, called Gentlemen 131, within the next year. I say no thank you.
Big Rapids has a limited amount of entertainment as it is and the first thing Mecosta County can think of to increase business – is a topless bar?
Have you seen our movie theatre, restaurants and shopping centers? No, of course you haven’t, because there are barely any of those as it is. Those of you for it are saying this club will generate business, which will lead to more jobs and profits. I say no way.
I have a lot of respect for the female population in this city and believe we are a little classier than working at a topless bar. The type of girls that would work at a topless bar would be few and far between here and Stanwood. I would hope most girls hold themselves to higher standards than taking off their shirt for a couple bucks. If this is true, the club would have a small selection of girls willing to work there.
But I think most women do hold themselves to higher standards. At least I do. I am not about to rip off my shirt to earn a couple extra bucks, just so I can run into the nasty guys who came in the bar to stare at me the next day in class. No thank you. I have better things to do than prance around like a half-naked Barbie doll.
I did not come to college to work at a topless bar. What kind of experience do you gain from that? It is not a path I want to be on. I would rather be taken out to dinner and have a guy actually remember my name, rather than to be remembered by what I look like below the neck. I really hope I am not alone on my viewpoint. Otherwise I may lose some serious respect for this town.
I hope any individual who is actually comfortable enough to work at a “gentlemen’s club” is not so desperate for a job that they are considering working here. I believe this town has other ways to create jobs and should not create some boy’s club for those who do not know what it’s like to have a girlfriend.
Sure, students spend a ton of money on booze, and guys love to stare at naked women. But come May 7, Mecosta will be a ghost-town. There will be a sparse number of college students and the high school teenagers won’t be able to walk through the doors. So that leaves creepy, old single men left wandering at the topless bar door. Where will the profits and business be then? This doesn’t sound like a popping business this community needs. This city should think about what businesses it should bring to the community before it turns into another empty building again.
