Dazzling styles similar to the rich and famous will be featured at the 22nd Annual You Beautiful Black Woman (YBBW) Fashion Show, Saturday April 14th.
YBBW and fees allocated by the Finance Division of Student Government will be hosting this free event in Williams Auditorium at 6 p.m.
The theme for this year’s show is Hollywood. Styles from Detroit area boutiques such as Umail, Shophista Boutique, and Head over Heels will be featured, as well as local fashion from Maurice’s, Ferris State University Book Store and Shirts Etc. There will also be an accessory designer featured, Glitz by Keisha, who is from Grand Rapids.
Tenique Tatum, Ferris junior in health care systems administration and this year’s chair of the event said, “The fashion show means a lot to the people involved. They get a chance to show off their personality while on stage.”
This year’s show will be different from years past. Not only will it feature different boutiques, but it will also have three performances by Mic Smitty and two hip-hop artists from the Detroit area, SayItAintTone and DoughBoyz Cashout.
Krispy Kream, a student comedian from Saginaw Valley State University, and Dominique Roby, Ferris senior in health care systems administration will be hosting this year’s event.
The YBBW Fashion Show started when members wanted to display their fashion in front of their Ferris community. It has been an ongoing event because it has been a great opportunity for students to showcase their fashion in front of other students.
Joy Haley, senior in health care systems administration and president of YBBW said, “The members of the organization have kept this going for 22 years because it has always been something for students to look forward to. It is a way to bring all organizations together and students that are not a part of organizations.”
This year YBBW has 50 students participating as models. There are also 20 students from YBBW who will be working behind the scenes.
“This gives the students a boost of confidence and also a chance to have fun on stage and be a part of a very huge event,” Haley said.
Not only will this be a very glamorous event, but it will also be a great night of entertainment. YBBW expects to have a great turn out.
“This year the show is free admission. So there’s no excuse not to come check it out,” Haley said. “Last year we had over 500 people attend, and we hope to have more since it’s the evening of the Big Event.”
Tatum is also looking forward to a similar outcome.
“A lot of work has gone into planning this event from finding designers to making sure the decorations are perfect,” Tatum said. “I hope to get every student on campus to the event as well as for the people involved to have an amazing time.”
