Ferris student affected by breast cancer promote awareness on campus

One Ferris student wants to encourage the campus to get involved in raising awareness for breast cancer.

Colleges Against Cancer President Whitney Rivest knows the hardships breast cancer presents after watching her grandmother’s struggle with the disease.

Rivest recounts the time her grandmother had a photo shoot with her head scarves and a shirt she made displaying “I’m too sexy for my hair” across the front. She believes her positive attitude and outlook was the reason she survived and considers her an inspiration.

“She’s definitely number one what I always think about every time I’m doing fundraising for Relay for Life,” Rivest said.

Unfortunately for Rivest, Ferris senior in business administration, cancer is prevalent on both sides of her family.

“While I’m young I’m going to do everything that I can to fight for the people in my family who have survived and for unfortunately the people who have passed away, so that eventually my little nephew who’s only one and half right now won’t ever have to deal with cancer in his life,” Rivest said. “That’s my goal.”

October is national breast cancer awareness month, so Colleges Against Cancer is putting on a bra decorating competition to help bring some attention to the issue.

“It is all about awareness. If you see a bra on campus, you’re going to notice,” Rivest said.

The idea behind this event is to have people decorate a bra and submit them on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 5:30 p.m. in the Centennial Room inside Rankin Student Center. They will then be hung up in various display cases around campus.

A prize will go out to the best decorated fraternity, sorority or RSO’s bra.

“We really just want people to be informed,” Rivest said. “The more you know the more you can help; the more you can prevent. It’s really about just getting the word out.”

CAC will also have bra pong tables set up on Oct. 23 and 24 in the IRC and Rankin Student Center to help get students involved and informed. Toss a ping pong ball in a cup and win a prize. They will also be giving out pink ribbons, accepting donations and selling Relay for Life t-shirts.

To be considered a competitor in the bra decorating contest, RSVP by email to cacferrisstate@nullgmail.com by Oct. 22.
