Only a few weeks into the school year and all the Ferris students – even the new blood that had never ventured out of a big city – is now adjusted to the culture shock of small town Big Rapids.
There’s plenty to do in this town, but there are a multitude of options not readily available. Punch lines revolving around how “there’s nothing to do in this town” will number in the thousands by now. The slate of things to do in Big Rapids is easy to poke fun at.
What isn’t so easy to do is actually changing that.
Only so much can be done, it’s true. No matter what students do, there probably isn’t going to be a venue for Taylor Swift to come to town any time soon. When it comes to smaller events, though, there’s no reason we can’t make our time here a little more interesting.
Every year, a number of intrepid, resourceful students coordinate fun events and help bring interesting entertainers to Big Rapids. This month alone, the Hispanic Student Organization has blown out their celebration of Hispanic Heritage month with comedy, dance, and entertainment.
Beyond the work of RSOs and the finance divisions funds, there are still opportunities to make things happen. Ferris State University houses thousands of students and there are at least a few super interesting, hyper talented and intelligent folks on this campus. The trick is bringing them together and making great things happen for the entire campus.
It’s not easy. It’s hard. It’s a lot harder to make these things happen than it is to write about them after the fact. It takes commitment, communication, and possibly even some basic accounting skills. Bringing some spice to this town you so readily dismiss is a worthwhile pursuit, though – not to mention how nice it’ll look on a resume.
