Spring Break in Big Rapids

How to spend the break if you're stuck in town

If you’re stuck in Big Rapids during Spring Break, you’re probably wondering, “What the hell am I supposed to do in this ghost town?” Look no further because unlike some townies, I’m here to help.

There’s a lot of things you can do to waste the time. One of my favorite things to do here is eat food.

If you haven’t noticed by now, Big Rapids has a lot of food establishments (Panera, Dairy Queen, Pizza King, Applebee’s and Pizzeria Vivo’s to name a few). So why not spend the break eating at all of the places in town? I recommend eating a lot of pizza.

If you freshmen out there haven’t gained your 15 pounds yet, now’s a good chance to do that. Also, you may discover a new favorite meal.

You could always start a band. Seriously, lots of well-known bands started in college. Look it up, it’s true.

There’s a music store downtown called “Quinn’s Music” that sells all kinds of instruments. Grab your friend, get some instruments and start recording. Who knows, maybe you’ll hit it big and not have to go back to college. Even if you’re not looking to “hit it big,” maybe you’ll discover a new hobby that you really enjoy. Or a new way to annoy those pesky neighbors. I recommend playing your instruments really loudly at 2:30 a.m. and meowing at the top of your voice.

Do you know about The Gate? It’s more than just a bar; it has bowling lanes and pretty neon lights that make your clothes glow! Go on in and knock a few pins down or reenact your favorite scenes from “The Big Lebowski.” The Gate also has a mini arcade in the back. Pretty swell stuff.

There are many things about Big Rapids that make it unique. If you’re bored and anything I’ve mentioned before doesn’t sound appealing, go out and explore the city yourselves. There’s a lot of things in Big Rapids I probably don’t even know about (and I’ve lived here for 21 years).

If you’re up to it, do some homework you have due. Some professors out there assign homework for break, so if Big Rapids is too dull for you, just sit in your warm, cozy bed and get to work! If you have homework that was due in January, now’s a great time to start it.

There are so many bars in this town, it’s crazy. So gather any remaining friends in town (or strangers you just met) and get a few drinks. If you go this route, you could just black out the whole break and not even worry about having too much time.

Most importantly, Big Rapids will be near silent. Take advantage of the space you don’t normally have with the rest of the student body here.
