A block by sophomore hitter Ayanna Buckley gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead in the first set, and FSU never looked back from there.
The Ferris State volleyball team took down the visiting Trevecca Nazarene Trojans 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional. Coming in as the No. 1 seed, the Bulldogs knew that the Trojans would be gunning for them, but the Dawgs were ready for the competition.
Ferris took the first set 25-17, which ended on a booming kill by senior hitter Megan Vander Meer. The Bulldogs would begin the second set in similar fashion with a huge spike by Buckley. The Bulldogs and Trojans battled during the second set, but the turning point once again came at the hands of Buckley.
Ferris State had the lead by a slim 10-9 margin before Buckley had a huge kill for the Dawgs, followed by a pivotal solo block that forced a Trojan timeout. The timeout wouldn’t stop the Bulldogs from rolling, as Ferris would build off the momentum and go on to win the set 25-16.
The Bulldogs would impose their will on the Trojans in the third set, dominating their way to a 25-10 victory.
Vander Meer led the Bulldogs in kills with 15. Stephanie Sikorski tacked on 34 assists and senior libero Danielle Dowd was the team leader in digs with 20.
The Bulldogs will go on to play the winner of the match between the University of Findlay and Hillsdale College. The match will take place at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4 at Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
