Ferris junior center and captain Kyle Schempp will forego his final year of eligibility at the collegiate level to chase his dreams towards the NHL.

It was announced on March 29 that Schempp signed a two-year entry-level deal with the New York Islanders to play with their AHL affiliate squad the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Schempp’s Amateur Tryout contract will see him in action with the Sound Tigers right away, as he joins the squad for their final eight regular season games.

The 22-year-old Saginaw, Mich. native was selected by the Islanders in the sixth round (155th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He was formerly the only Bulldog on the active roster to have been drafted.

Schempp logged 29 goals and 37 assists in 121 games with the Bulldogs. He was a key component in Ferris’ conference championship and NCAA Tournament run this season, and also led the Dawgs to consecutive appearances in the WCHA Final Five in his freshman and sophomore seasons.

Schempp will have his first opportunity to shine this weekend when his new team hits the road to take on the Scranton Penguins this Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
