Another Big Rapids armed robbery

UPDATE: Ferris Department of Public Safety confirmed that Nelson was taken into custody by the FBI Friday, July 13. He was found in Chicago, Ill.

An armed man robbed a bank in Big Rapids Thursday, July 12 and, as of Thursday evening, has yet to be apprehended.

According to Fox 17, authorities say the suspect is Nicholas Max Nelson of Newaygo. Nelson is 5 feet 5 inches with a medium build, brown hair and beard, and was wearing glasses at the time of the robbery, according to police.

The robbery happened around 12:45 p.m. at the Isabella Bank on Perry Street in Big Rapids, according to Fox 17.

The FSU Emergency Alert said the suspect fled the scene in a blue four-door Volkswagen heading west towards U.S. 131. The alert also assured students there was no threat to campus.

This is the second armed robbery of the summer in Big Rapids.

“Be very vigilant of your surroundings and what’s happening around you,”Mecosta County Sheriff Todd Purcell said. “We live in a very safe community but sometimes people don’t want to follow the law.”
