Ferris pre-medicine junior (Casnovia, Michigan) –

1. What are your plans for spring break?

“For spring break, I plan to attend the Newman Center for Catholic Students’ Spring Break Mission Trip to the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels in West Humboldt Park, Chicago. This is one of the nation’s most impoverished and dangerous neighborhoods, and this mission exists to aid its neighbors by providing food, shelter, education, clothing, fellowship and other day-to-day necessities to local residents.”

2. Have you been there before?

“I have been here twice in the past. The Franciscan Sisters and Brothers who run this mission are remarkably humble and caring toward people of all backgrounds, which is vital in such a diverse neighborhood. The work is humbling, but it is the most meaningful thing that I do throughout the semester, since I know that it is directly improving lives in even a small way. It is unsettling to see the completely atrocious conditions that people who live in such a rich country must live in, so I try to do what I can to help the mission and their goal to alleviate the suffering of so many.”

3. How long have you been planning this?

“I have not been planning the trip with the Newman Center e-board, but I set aside my spring break each year for this purpose.”

4. In what ways did you cut costs?

“The trip only costs $50 due to fundraising efforts by the Newman Center and the Knights of Columbus, so I did not personally have to cut costs.”

5. What was your favorite spring break ever?

“I have been on two past trips, and I would say that the rst one was the best due to the complete shock of seeing what life was like for people in this neighborhood. It really made me see how easy I’ve had it in life to this point, but that should not be the motivation for people to go on such a trip. You go to help; gaining new insights is secondary.”

1. What are your plans for spring break?

“I’m gonna be going to my parents’ place in Florida and probably have some friends down there. We might go visit some clubs.”

2. Have you been here before?

“Yes, it’s my parents’ house.”

3. How long have you been planning this?

“I actually just recently committed to it. I asked my parents if we could come down and they didn’t really care.”

4. Did you save for this trip?

“A little bit but I haven’t been very good at managing my money. So, I don’t have a lot left.”

5. What ways are you cutting costs?

“I didn’t really. I wasn’t planning on saving money for a trip or worrying how much I spend, because I’m gonna go there and have fun. I’m not gonna restrict what I do.”
