Spring’s slow awakening

Season off to snowy start in Michigan

The beginning of April has brought both low temperatures and fickle precipitation to Big Rapids, with sunny days that have been followed by snowy nights.

Despite the unfavorable weather, Ferris students can stay comfortable by mixing up their style and routines with many different options.

Once it hits Groundhog Day, the itch for spring cleaning begins whether or not Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow. Here in Michigan, those wanting to bring out their skirts and short sleeves have to get creative or practical with their choices.

Students may go into class while it’s sunny and come outside two hours later to find an inch of snow on the ground. Wearing versatile clothing is crucial for spring.

Criminal justice junior George Lawless described how he stays true to his sense of style, despite the season. He stays loose with clothing items, like flannels, because he can comfortably wear layers.

“I love to wear southern outfits throughout the year. So it stays the same for me with my jeans and flannel. The hat always changes with the event I’m going to. If I’m going to a social event then I wear my cowboy hat.”

Michigan is well known for its inconsistent weather during spring. The on-and-off snow and rain are discouraging and leave those wondering how to dress each day.

It can be difficult to plan and pack light when the weather changes so quickly. Choosing breathable fabrics, such as cotton and linen, allows more airflow, and a sweatshirt can provide warmth should the weather turn.

Digital animation and game design junior Micah Graham explained how Michigan’s spring is the perfect weather for him.

“I run warm, but in the event that I get cold I usually have a light jacket in my backpack,” Graham said. “Especially in this early transitional period where it’s like 40s to 60s that’s perfect for me. A little breeze makes it even better.”

Whether you run warm or cold, spring can challenge any college student. Coming back from spring break and finishing the year seems laborious. So why not get creative with your style on campus? Changing things up refreshes your view and is on brand for spring. Not to mention, you could find a new favorite style.

Don’t know where to start? Vogue predicts that “even minimalists will be drawn to this season’s wispy pinks and pale yellows, which look great against wardrobe neutrals like grey, navy and even chocolate brown suede.”

Pinks and yellows bring to mind flowers or even soft sunrises. Accenting with pastels brings a touch of spring to any ensemble that you could come up with.

To prepare for the season, our mental states need refreshing just as much as our wardrobes. It’s frustrating to receive a low grade after working hard on a project or essay. It’s easy to feel like giving up when that happens. But it doesn’t mean that you’re not smart or a failure. Instead, watch a few funny YouTube videos or listen to your favorite song. And remember that setbacks are temporary! Remember to be kind to yourself, as coping is hard.

Human resource management junior Vivian Jahncke described how, instead of coping, she reminds herself that the hectic spring weather is more enjoyable than the long and cold winter.

“I get so tired of winter that even unpredictable spring seems appealing in comparison,” Jahncke said. “The snowy Michigan winters are harsh enough to make even a frosty spring seem pleasant.”

When you’re going through spring, it can feel like it will last forever. The beauty of life is that everything is temporary. Even a Michigan spring. Try getting started on that spring cleaning you’re dreading. While it seems like a daunting chore, clearing out built-up junk will make your space and mind feel cleaner.
