Only a month removed from the Bulldogs’ loss in the Midwest Regional Quarterfinal, head coach Andy Bronkema has been hired to take the recently vacant Central Michigan head coaching position.
Bronkema, who led the Bulldogs to a 2018 National Championship, has taken the job at Central Michigan after the April 3 firing of four-year head coach Tony Barbee.
The two-time GLIAC Coach of the Year has been the head coach at Ferris State since 2013, compiling a 279-105 record during his tenure. He has also secured three GLIAC regular season titles, four GLIAC tournament titles and an NCAA all-time best record of 38-1 during the 2018 run to the national championship.
Bronkema emerged as the finalist for Central Michigan out of a pool that included Michigan State assistant Jon Borovich, a CMU alum and Oakland University assistant Jeff Smith, who has had two coaching stints at CMU, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Ferris athletic director Steve Brockelbank released a statement regarding Bronkema.
“Andy has been an incredible ambassador for Ferris State University and Bulldog Basketball and will be greatly missed,” Brockelbank said. “While we will miss his leadership, dedication and commitment, we’re excited for him and look forward to watching him at the D1 level. He has poured his heart and soul into our program and earned this opportunity.”
Ferris State will now conduct a national search for the school’s 14th all time head coach for men’s basketball.
