Lucy Dacus releases fourth album "Forever Is A Feeling"

After going on tour with Boygenius in 2023 and announcing their hiatus in 2024, Lucy Dacus of the supergroup has released a new album titled “Forever is a Feeling” following the band’s temporary disbandment.

Dacus’ most recent album is not her first, having released three others beforehand and multiple singles. Dacus has been a part of the music world for a long time, her first release being in 2016, her album “No Burden” with nine songs.

Dacus’ latest album was released on Friday, March 28. It debuted at No.1 on the Top Rock and Americana/Folk Album charts. The album served as a narrative of various experiences involving love and heartbreak and consisted of 13 songs with a 43-minute run time.

Compared to her last albums, the latest release seems to depart from her previous style, including a lot more instrumentation compared to a stronger rock sound in her past albums. Despite the additional instrumentation and rich strings, her album still has a touch of her indie rock origins.

The album begins with “Calliope Prelude,” a simple string instrumental that doesn’t include any vocals. It immediately jumps into the following track, a somewhat sad “Big Deal.” The song is upbeat yet soft, with a fitting repetitive chorus.

Tracks like “Ankles” and “Best Guess” went viral on the social media platform TikTok quickly after their pre-release from the rest of the album. Dacus even encouraged masculine presenting queer people to use her sound snippet of “Best Guess” to help her find people to use in her music video.

Towards the end of her album, her track “Bullseye” features popular musician Hozier. The song is a bittersweet, upbeat ballad heavily complemented by the blend of Dacus’ and Hozier’s voices.

Throughout the album, Dacus bounces back and forth between upbeat songs about love and sorrowful songs about tragic heartbreaks and mature experiences. Each song reveals an experience and a story to any listener who pieces together the lyrics.

The album is a euphonious masterpiece that gives listeners a glimpse into Dacus’ mature experiences with relationships. As a long-time listener, it is nice to see a talented artist get noticed and their music be appreciated by the masses. 9/10.
