EDITOR’S COLUMN: Vison, voice and values

My plans for the Ferris State Torch

During times of uncertainty, it is our job as a student newspaper to serve as a source of clarity and light. A torch that offers comfort, support and answers to those who feel overwhelmed or unheard.

As the new Editor-in-Chief for The Ferris State Torch, I am honored to carry this responsibility and lead a publication that continues to inform, represent and uplift our campus and community.

I’ve spent the last two years growing within the Torch, first as a reporter and later as a section editor. During that time, I’ve developed a deep respect for what this paper stands for and the critical role it plays in the life of our university. I have also seen firsthand the challenges of this role and I am confident in my ability to manage them with professionalism, resilience and empathy.

One of my top priorities as EIC is to foster a collaborative, inclusive newsroom that reflects the diverse voices of our campus. I believe in fairness, objectivity and ethical journalism.

I want every student to feel seen in our stories, whether they are celebrating a success, confronting an issue or finding their voice. This paper is and always has been by the students, for the students. That mission calls for constant communication with our readership, and I plan to engage with the campus community more directly and frequently.

Here at the Torch, we’re more than just a newspaper. We’re a voice for the students, faculty and community members who make up Ferris. We’re here to listen, to understand and to make sure your stories are told with honesty, respect and the care they truly deserve.

Equally important is our responsibility to maintain the standards of ethical journalism. In a media landscape that consistently changes and faces scrutiny, student journalists must lead by example.

I will work to ensure our team practices integrity in reporting, transparency in sourcing and accountability in editing. By encouraging positive media literacy and providing a hands-on journalism experience, I hope to equip our writers with the tools to become thoughtful, competent and principled storytellers while still giving our readership the same quality content they always expect when reading the Torch.

I am also excited by the opportunity this role gives me to work more closely with university leadership. The Torch should not only report on our institution but also actively participate in the dialogue that shapes it. Through consistent coverage, fair reporting and open inquiry, we can hold those in power accountable while fostering mutual respect and understanding.

I want to thank Noah, Jess and Dylan, the EIC’s who showed me what it means to be a leader. To my mentors, guides and friends, thank you for taking a chance on a kid with little experience and a big dream. Your trust, patience and leadership shaped me more than you know. I wouldn’t be where I am without any of you, and I’ll carry your legacy forward with pride. I know I have big shoes to fill, and I won’t let you down.

The Torch is admired both on and off campus, and it deserves leadership that admires it in return. Thank you for supporting student journalism.

Our readership is truly what keeps this paper alive, and I am ready to give this paper everything I have, just as the editors before me did.
