Editor’s statement – Grace Heethuis

Grace Heethuis shares culture section plans for the 2025-26 year

When people look at the culture section, they should see truthful fun and accurate depictions of what it means to be a Ferris student.

For those who don’t know me, my name is Grace Heethuis. I started reporting at the Torch last semester. I worked tirelessly to build my writing skills and become a better reporter over the semester.

At the end of the semester, I was asked to take over the culture section. While I was honored, I also realized that I now had a huge responsibility.

I am responsible for ensuring that high-quality content is displayed in the culture section in each edition, and everyone at Ferris feels represented equally.

That is exactly what I hope for the culture section to be: A place where every student feels like they are seen, heard, and represented. I will strive to make it a section that represents all walks of life equally.

I have always believed in bringing out the best in everyone, regardless of my personal views. There is good inside each person, and I hope to be able to highlight that with my incredible reporters, as well as all of the people featured in the culture section this semester.

I am looking forward to meeting new people through the Torch this coming school year, so I would like to tell you a few things that might help you get to know me, too.

I have been writing since I was five years old, and it has been my passion ever since. I enjoy writing poetry more than anything, although I dabble in many other genres as well. I also worked at the writing center for part of the spring semester.

Big Rapids has always been my home, and it is where I met my husband just a few years ago. We are now expecting our first baby in Dec. 2025.

When classes start back up, I’m excited to learn more about writing and all of the staff and students at Ferris.

I plan to do more features on staff and students, as well as incorporate fun and unique ideas into the stories in my section.
