Editor’s statement – Jackie Moglia

Jackie Moglia shares opinions section plans for the 2025-26 year

After two years as the editor for this section, I’ve gotten a better grip on what I want this section to be and what areas I need to expand on. For those who don’t know me, my name is Jackie Moglia, and I intend to continue to build the opinions section.

Something that I would love to see for this section would be more student voices. I would love more guest writers and input. Something I discussed with the previous editor-in-chief, Dylan Rider, was creating more polls to get student opinions that we can run in this section. I’ve started thinking of topics for polls that students would want to share.

The guest writers I would love for this section don’t even just have to be students; I would absolutely love staff opinions, or even a piece from Dr. Bill Pink. I want to highlight more than just the voices we have on the Torch staff. Ideally, we’ll be running a few more divided opinions this coming year to continue to highlight diverse voices on campus.

This past year, we’ve had an amazing cartoonist working with us, Blake Flanery, who does bi-weekly comics for this section. I’d love for other artists on campus who would want to do guest cartoons to reach out and create more outlets for voices to be heard.

I’ve been incredibly lucky with how consistently amazing the pieces have been in my section. As I’ve said, I want to expand the section and find ways to highlight student opinions. With where the journalism world is, getting well-written opinions out there is incredibly important.

If you’re reading this and have an idea for a piece you would want to run, reach out! If you know someone who wants to write, encourage them to reach out. The Torch is by the students, for the students, and I want my section to continue to reflect that ideal.
