Ten Years Ago
Campus was shocked by news of a violent sexual assault which occurred off-campus. In the Oct. 2, 2002 edition of the Torch, Amy McElmurray, assistant news editor, reported on the alleged assault. Suspect John Paul Kane was accused of sexually assaulting the victim at a barn house party. The victim had woken up at 3 a.m. to use the restroom and the suspect had offered to escort her. Instead of escorting her, he dragged her out to the barn where her screams led another student to investigate. Upon entering the barn, the student discovered the suspect on top of the victim. The suspect was later arrested by police.

Ferris becomes the first university in Michigan to allow students to register for their classes by telephone. This telephonic registration was reported on by Editor in Chief Pat Trofatter.
Thirty-Five Years Ago
Ferris allocates $17,000 (nearly $65,000 in today’s dollars) to the School of Technical and Applied Arts to purchase solar heating equipment. The money was mainly spent on supplies, as design and construction was largely in the hands of faculty and students. This would be an opportunity for Ferris to explore feasibility of implementing solar energy on buildings across campus.
