Wow, I can’t believe this is the last time I will be addressing you as Editor-in-chief of the Torch.
It seems like just yesterday I sat behind this desk for the first time. Now, we must say goodbye.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank a few people for making this year what it was.
First and foremost, I’d like to thank this year’s Torch staff for their hard work and commitment. I feel privileged to have not only worked but also learned alongside all of you. Although not often recognized, your service is vital to this institution.
For those staff members returning, I advise you to never forget who you’re working for: the readers. In everything you do, keep them in mind. Oh, and while you’re out there chasing down the truth, make sure to have a little fun along the way.
To those staff members graduating, congratulations! Best of luck in your future endeavors. If you’re anything like me, the Torch has provided you with experience extending well beyond the realm of journalism. In my opinion, the world would be a better (or at least more thoughtful) place if more people had worked at newspapers.
Next, I’d like to thank Torch Adviser Steve Fox. I never thought I’d say this, but I think I’m going to miss your seemingly nonstop emails, texts and phone calls. Your commitment to the Torch and the students who work here is truly admirable. We’re fortunate to have you, and I’m even more fortunate to have gotten to work with you so closely this year. I don’t have enough column inches to recount all you’ve taught me.
Finally, I’d like to thank the readers. I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again: without you, the Torch would be nothing. I’ve genuinely enjoyed my time serving you, even when you were shooting and stabbing one another.
In all seriousness though, this job has been more rewarding than I ever could have imagined. I never thought I could care so much about people I had never met, but I guess that’s journalism. Thank you, readers, for helping me to discover my passion. While you won’t be my last audience, you were certainly my first, and for that, I will always remember you.
