The Love Your Melon crew (LYM) marked February as one for the books.
On Tuesday, Feb. 13, LYM hosted their first ever “Be the Match” event, where members of LYM swabbed the cheeks of students to find potential matches for cancer patients in need. 103 swabs were made at the event.
“’Be the Match’ is the national marrow registry with the options of donating blood or bone marrow when you match with a cancer patient in need,” Ferris hospitality management senior and LYM captain Karly Balogh said.
Having a mother who is a two-time breast cancer survivor, Balogh knew she wanted to join LYM and be a part of this life-changing event.
“The entire event went amazing and exceeded my own expectations of what I thought the event would be,” Balogh said. “Our ‘Be the Match’ representative shared that an average for swab drives is nine to 18 swabs. We reached 34 swabs during the first hour.”
Though the event planning began in November, Ferris hospitality management senior and LYM vice president/event manager Jessica Altene hopes to make “Be the Match” an annual or per semester event.
“We strive to make a positive impact on the world and try to find creative ways to promote the brand and help those battling cancer,” Altene said.
