The truck driver responsible for killing 16 people and injuring 14 others by crashing into a youth hockey bus in Saskatchewan in 2018 was recently sentenced to eight years in prison. The driver, Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, hit the bus while driving a tractor-trailer and ignoring five signs warning him to stop. Sidhu was on his first solo trip as a truck driver, and was only qualified for the position two weeks prior. There is no evidence Sidhu was under any substance-related influence or texting while driving.

Scientists are researching a newly identified species of baleen whales, and they’ve discovered these whales exist across the tropical regions of the world. The species is called Omura’s whale, named after Japanese whale biologist Hideo Omura, and was first identified by Japanese researchers in 2003. Omura’s whales are filter feeders and have unique patterns on their bodies. Their backs are covered with asymmetrical chevrons, and they have a swirling pattern of light coloration and four dark stripes on their heads.

The resignation of Iraq Provincial Governor Nawfal Hamadi is being sought after a pleasure raft capsized, killing at least 97 people. Hundreds of passengers boarded the raft to attend Kurdish New Year celebrations at an amusement park island on the Tigris River. The raft was severely over-loaded, causing one of its cables to break. Hamadi is considered responsible because his government licensed the raft prior to the celebration. He was cited by Iraq’s Prime Minister of “negligence” and “shortcomings in carrying out his duties and responsibilities.”
