The news section of the Ferris State Torch is the place to be if you are looking for information on the latest and greatest on or around campus.
My name is Emma Walters, and I am the new editor for the news section. This will be my first year as editor and my second year with the Torch. I began my work for the paper as a full-time news reporter and moved down to freelancing in the second semester of the year. With this change came the opportunity to focus on heavier, more long-term stories that required more research to complete. These stories are where my passion has settled.

My goal is to provide every student, faculty member, and community member with relevant and important news surrounding Ferris.
In addition to covering timely campus and community news, I also strive to dig deeper into Ferris through my section. Uncovering the facts behind the university and exploring how events around campus affect current and prospective students is of key interest to me as a reporter and editor.
I intend to keep Michigan, global and national news updates within the section to provide readers with information about things happening beyond the world of Ferris. I also plan to keep news briefs to provide quick coverage on things happening around town.
Finally, I want to do less event coverage in the news section and focus more on keeping the Ferris and Big Rapids community informed about campus-related news.
I also hope to provide fellow writers with a place to practice their journalism skills in my section and gain valuable professional experience through their time at the Torch.
If you know of news happening around campus that you think should be covered in the Torch, please reach out!
