Chappell Roan summer

Tips for a midwest princess

Last summer’s theme was “Brat Summer,” so it’s time for something new. For all the feminomenon out there, this summer’s theme is Chappell Roan-inspired.

Ever since she catapulted into the mainstream spotlight with the release of “Pink Pony Club” in April 2020, Chappell Roan has been a popular household name. Queer fans feel represented by her music and relate to her story of feeling out of place in her conservative upbringing. Having an artist like her be popular at this time is uplifting.

It’s no lie that the world feels backward right now. Federal orders are taking effect and making life harder than it already was. Marginalized groups are feeling the strain of targeted policies. High tariffs have stalled imports into the country, and the average consumer is expected to foot the bill.

For college students, exam week approached way too quickly, and it feels like only yesterday there was still snow on the ground. However, the seasons are an unforgiving wheel that has brought summer to our doorstep once again. The weather has finally begun to warm up, and students have been out and about on campus more than usual lately, enjoying the sunshine during exam week.

Summer almost snuck up on us with how quickly the weather changed. Whether you’re staying in Big Rapids, heading home to spend the summer somewhere else or working an internship, this summer is time for individuality and living your best life. In honor of summer’s arrival, here is a hot to-go checklist of Chappell Roan-inspired goals for this summer.

1. Setting and Respecting Boundaries

Chappell Roan has always been very vocal about her boundaries as a celebrity. She campaigns for her privacy and denies the pseudo-relationship that a singer has with their fans. Another “controversial” performer, Bo Burnham, has also received hate for this sentiment. While many found this ridiculous for a celebrity, I agree that even famous singers, actors and personalities deserve privacy too.

I find the public’s demand to know every facet of a celebrity’s life abhorrent. They’re a human with rights just like the general public. So this summer, work on setting and respecting boundaries with yourself and others. Your mental health can’t be at its best if you don’t feel safe in your situation. Setting boundaries will help you deal with uncomfortable feelings.

2. Queer Representation

June is Pride month and Chappell Roan is a queer icon. Her concerts are safe spaces for queer fans. This summer is the LGBTQ+ community’s time to shine.

If you’re not queer or in the closet, be the best ally you can be this summer. All we ask is to be accepted. Someone you know might need some words of encouragement.

3. Embrace Your Individuality

It might be my maximalist self talking, but seeing the same “modern” trends over and over is sad. One of the things I love about the LGBTQ+ community is how different everyone is. Chappell Roan herself is seen in unusual outfits like full armor and makeup inspired by drag performers. This summer is a time to embrace what makes you different and be proud of who you are.

Our individuality is the best part about humanity. Why not embrace it? It took me a long time to fully love who I was, but now I can never go back. Try something new this summer or work on something you’re already interested in.

This summer is a time for change and positivity. This year has been full of negativity already, and we’ve only just started May. In order to see any difference in the world, we have to actively work on change. So sit down, listen to “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” and make this summer yours.
