The Ferris State Bulldogs took down the Michigan Tech Huskies by a score of 3-1 during their home opener and the first game of GLIAC play for the 2025 season.
The Bulldogs (6-3, 1-0 in GLIAC) faced off against the Huskies (3-5, 0-1 in GLIAC) for the first game back at Ewigleben Arena.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair until the Huskies took a four-point lead at 16-11, then the Bulldogs went on a run. Then, tying the game at 16 going on to win the first set by a score of 25-23. With the Bulldogs then taking the second set by another close one, winning by a score of 26-24.
The next set was all Huskies, with their biggest lead being 8-19 before the Bulldogs went on a 12-2 run to bring the score within two at 21-19. Michigan Tech pulled away to take the third set, winning by a score of 25-21.
The fourth set was incredibly tense with nine total lead changes in the set. Yet again it was a tight set but Ferris ultimately pulled away at the end to win the fourth and final set by a score of 26-24.
Head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm spoke about her team’s ability to play from behind.
“I mean we are a streaky team,” Brandel-Wilhelm said. “Our team is young and streaky, we give away points and earn points in bunches and so we’d like to settle that down a little bit.”
Sophomore outside hitter Gabby Piazza showed out this game, having 13 kills on 51 total attempts with sophomore setter Hayley Wegener earning three kills with 51 assists on the match.
The Bulldogs next face off against the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 12 p.m. in Ewigleben Arena.
