Letters to the Editor 09.21.11

Dear Editor,

I am a family member of a Ferris student and am just writing to say how offended I am by the illustration in today’s Sept. 14th issue of the Torch that is in print and online. As my own sorority’s Standards Chair, I worked very hard to keep our young women to have the reputation of our sorority in the forefront of their mind at all times. We prided ourselves on being dedicated, committed, hard-working and fun young women who did a lot to help out school and student body. Perhaps the illustration was to incite a sarcastic view of fraternal organizations, but I think it was completely distasteful and reflects very poorly both on the Torch and Ferris State University. Of course the decision is yours, but I would definitely encourage your paper to consider removing the illustration from the website and publishing an apology to the student body, namely those members of your school’s sororities, in your next issue.

Sincerely,

Lindsay

Dear Editor,

As an alum of Ferris, I was very upset when I saw this cartoon being commented on all over facebook and the Torch website today. Yes, I was Greek but also was a graduate of the Honors program and the College of Pharmacy. Greek life involves so much more than partying and being wasted all the time. In fact, many of my sisters didn’t drink just to get drunk and act like the stereotype. Greeks are held to standards including GPA requirements and community service events that many other student on campus are not. Sororities do a lot of good things for the community at Ferris and in Big Rapids. To print this cartoon in the same issue as an article about DZ donating school supplies to a local school and an article about Bree and all the amazing things she did while at Ferris was totally inappropriate.

Sincerely,

Jessica

Dear Editor,

I am appalled at the way all the sororities are acting about the comic. Last week, an opinions article attacked atheists and none of these people cared at all. Now that it’s some sorority under fire, it’s something to get upset about? What has this campus come to when people’s beliefs are stomped upon and no one will say anything, but when a sorority has a little fun poked at them, they act like it was the most offensive thing ever. Get your heads out of your @$$es, people. There are worse problems in the world than your reputation.

Sincerely,

Meghan
