Ferris Alumnus becomes Red Wings assistant coach

This past summer Jeff Blashill, Ferris alumnus, accepted the position to be the NHL assistant coach for the Red Wings.

Blashill came to Ferris as a student in 1994, where he played on the D1 hockey team as the goaltender. After the first year, he earned the Rookie of the Year Award.

After graduating, Blashill became the assistant coach for the Ferris hockey team for a few years until he took the assistant coach offer at Miami University.

He stayed at that position until 2008, when he was named head coach and general manager of the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League. He served these roles until 2010, when he became head coach of Western Michigan’s hockey team.

Eventually Blashill’s name became so well known in the hockey world that it caught the attention of Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock, who then offered him a position.
