School of Criminal Justice to open new academy

The Correctional Officers Training Academy is coming to Big Rapids through Ferris State University’s School of Criminal Justice. The academy is set to open in 2014.

The new training course makes students eligible for certification as county jail corrections officers. Students in the Criminal Justice program can already obtain certification to be a state prison corrections officer.

Although Ferris will not be responsible for providing certification, the Michigan Sheriff’s Association’s Training Council recommended the program be opened at Ferris.
