Franklund named general education coordinator

Dr. Clifton Franklund, current associate professor of Biological Science, has been appointed as Ferris State University’s general education coordinator.

Franklund’s position as general education coordinator will begin in the summer of 2014.

The position comes after years of hard work to improve means of identifying ways to assess student learning. Franklund will continue the work of the General Education Task Force.

Franklund, who has served Ferris since 2006, received Ferris’ Distinguished Teacher Award and has been recognized by staff and students for his teaching effectiveness and ability to engage students in the classroom.

Reifert selected as interim dean of College of Education and Human Services

Steve Reifert was named interim dean of Ferris State University’s College of Education and Human Services on Feb. 24.

Reifert previously served as interim associate COEHS dean and director of the School of Criminal Justice. Reifert was noted for his success in leading academic programs, organization academic operations and assessment activities, as well as representing Ferris with accreditors and external stakeholders. He has worked at Ferris since 2006.

Before Ferris, Reifert worked at the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety for 18 years and served a total of 11 years in the United States Air Forces.

Housing improvement funding approved

The Ferris State University Board of Trustees approved $1.6 million to be spent on 2014-15 housing improvements.

Student residence halls and West Campus Apartments will largely be the focus of the renovations this summer.

The allotted funds will primarily go toward improvements of flooring, lighting, painting, resident hall lobby upgrades, and improved wireless Internet service.

Ferris’ AMA is a top-10 finalist in national competition

The Ferris State University’s American Marketing Association chapter was ranked top 10 nationally for a case they prepared for Hershey’s Take 5. Each year the National AMA allows AMA chapters across the country to prepare a case for a competition. This year Ferris’ chapter was selected as a finalist for the Hershey Take 5 Case Competition.

Ferris AMA will present their case to Hershey executives at the National Conference in New Orleans April 10-12. If their case is chosen Hershey will implement their plan.

Homecoming committee looking for student staff

Ferris State University’s homecoming committee is searching for students who are interested in planning Homecoming 2014.

Students on the homecoming staff can gain experience in areas such as community outreach, event planning, marketing, public relations and leadership.

Applications can be submitted via OrgSync and are due at 5 p.m. on Feb. 28.
