Homecoming King & Queen

Dear Editor,

Deciding to run for homecoming queen was the best decision that I could have made for myself. Although I was nervous, and didn’t know what to expect I still ran and gave it my all. On the wonderful day of October 4, 2014, I, Jazmine Goode was crowned the new Ferris State University 2014-2015 Homecoming Queen. I would like to take some time to thank so many for all their help, support, love, and words of encouragements. First I can’t thank any one before I thank God for allowing me to make it to this place in my life and for continuing to bless me with great opportunities. Secondly, I would like to thank my friends for helping me campaign all day and night and for cheering me on in anything that I do. I want to thank my campaign team for their hard work for helping me on all social media, for passing out candy in the quad, and for helping me chalk even after it rained. To my wonderful supporting organizations, You Beautiful Black Women and the Ferris State Cheer Team, I thank you and love each and every one of you. I also want to send a huge thank you to Delta Sigma Pi Co-ed Business Fraternity for donating money to my campaign. And to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Zeta Rho Chapter for donating bags of candy to my campaign, I thank you for your support. To my wonderful and hardworking escort, Anthony Brock, I thank you for being there every step of the way and taking the time to take my campaign photos they came out beautiful. I want to thank also thank the people who bought t-shirts, and Different by Design for completing them a day early. I want to thank the CLACS office, the Homecoming committee, and Alumni Association for putting on a great 2014 Homecoming all the events were amazing. To the beautiful ladies that graced the court, I thank you for making the experience fun and want you to know that we all are great young ladies inside and out. To my supportive family that sent all of their love from my hometown of Detroit, and for driving 3 hours to share the moment of being crowned queen with me, I can’t thank you enough and know that whatever I accomplish you’ll be there. To Tevin, I thank you for being there for me, and for sharing the wonder day with me, you truly have my heart and has always been my biggest supporter. I can’t thank the students of Ferris State University enough for voting me as the new Homecoming Queen. Thank you everyone for all the text messages, phone calls, emails, and all the love and support given to me, it truly means a lot to me and I will cherish that moment and this year.

Sincerely,

Jazmine S. Goode

Dear Editor,

When the finalists were chosen for Homecoming Court, the committee informed us that the King and Queen traditionally write a letter to the Torch. Thinking of what to write has been a constant struggle between different sides of my brain. I thought about what makes a great letter, a great quote, or a great acceptance speech, and the same two words kept popping up: Matthew McConaughey. This perfect model for a human being has always been gracious, humble, and confident in his words. Every speech or quote he delivers is charming, elegant, honest and motivational. People also tell me we look strikingly similar (nobody tells me that). With that fact in mind, I’ll be writing the rest of this letter from the point of view of Matthew McConaughey.

Alright, alright, alright, it seems like we got one hell of a campus right here. I look around and all I see are winners and folks who are closer than a heartbeat away from winning. No more excuses are allowed, if a Texas boy like me can win an Oscar, then you can do anything. Now, listen here, great students of this fine university, I want you to take your hand, make a fist out of it, place it over your chest, and I want you to pound away while humming your favorite song. Mmmm Mmmmm. I want you to feel the beats you’re creating and become the best version of you. There ain’t nothing better than the best you. When I open up my ears, I hear the bark of a beastly Bulldog basking in the beaten opponents of this University, and I’m talking to you Grand Valley. Ferris State, unite as one and show the world that you earn its respect. Want to know the best thing about college students, besides me getting older and them staying the same age? It’s the drive, sweat, and smiles they give to be apart of something bigger than themselves. Keep on keepin’ on, Ferris. From your friend, Matthew McConaughey.

In all seriousness, thank you so much for the honor of being FSU’s King. I couldn’t be more grateful and you guys make this campus my favorite place on the planet.

Sincerely,

Evan Pazkowski
