Track & field competes at GLIAC Championships

The men and women of Ferris State’s track & field team recently participated in the two-day GLIAC Championships. Placing 11th in team points were the women of the Bulldogs, while the men in the crimson and gold took home 13th place in the meet.

Ferris competitors were able to record three nationally-qualifying marks in the meet. Senior Samantha Johnson took fourth in the mile run and beat the national provisional qualification standard, while teammate Breeann Ovokaitys took seventh and also posted a qualifying time in the same race. The women’s distance medley consisting of Johnson, Ovokaitys, Ashley Hamilton and Samantha Humphrey placed fourth with a time of 11:49.30, which also topped the qualification standard.

The next time the teams will see competition will be as part of another two-day event at the Grand Rapids Open on March 27-28. The Bulldogs will then participate in the Spartan Invite in East Lansing on the following weekend.

Tennis winning streaks come to an end

Both the men and women’s tennis teams were riding a winning streak when Indianapolis rolled into Big Rapids last Saturday, but neither team could make that claim after the volleys had ceased that afternoon.

The men’s team sits on a 4-2 record this spring after most recently falling to Indianapolis 5-4. Ferris competitors Laurent Galarneau, Roger Hernandez Pena and Tyler Bridges each won their singles matches, but it was not enough to carry the Bulldogs past the No. 26 Indianapolis Greyhounds.

The Bulldogs of the women’s team are 2-2 since returning to action this spring. Having lost to Indianapolis 8-1 on Feb. 28, the women were then defeated by Western Michigan on the road on the very next day, 7-0.

The teams will next see action this weekend when they travel to Florida to take on a series of teams from March 8-12.

Four Dawgs earn All-GLIAC honors

Tonight, the men’s basketball team will be hosting Ashland in Wink Arena to kick off the GLIAC Tournament. While the team’s focus will be on the game, the conference recently took time to recognize four Bulldogs who earned all-conference honors.

Drew Lehman was chosen to the All-GLIAC first team, while teammates Jared Stolicker and Josh Fleming earned second team nods. Both James Chappell and Stolicker were named to the GLIAC All-defensive team.
