The FagBug will be making an appearance at Ferris along with a presentation of the Fagbug Documentary.
The Diverse Sexuality and Gender Alliance (D-SAGA) is bringing FagBug to campus. The event is set to take place on Friday, Oct. 5. The FagBug vehicle will be on the North Quad from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be pizza from 5 to 6 p.m. and the documentary will be presented at 6 p.m. in IRC 121 with a question and answer session following.
On FagBug’s website, their statement said, “The mission of Fagbug is to raise awareness about hate crimes and homophobia, to give a voice for those who are silent, to inspire others to take a stand against bullies and to be an example of how to overcome obstacles in bringing creative projects to life.”
Erin Davies, founder of the FagBug activism movement, was a victim of a hate crime in Albany, NY. Since Davies had a rainbow sticker on her Volkswagen Beetle, her car was vandalized with words such as “fag” and phrases such as “u r gay.”
Davies decided to take action by taking her car on a 58-day trip around the United States and Canada. Davies learned about even more serious hate crimes while on her trip. After she drove the car for one year, she decided to give her car a makeover by having it painted in all rainbow colors.
Kelsey Hart, Ferris junior in criminal justice, said, “I think it will be a good experience and eye opener for the community because some may think hate crimes don’t exist because they aren’t always public like the FagBug.”
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, data for 2008 showed an 11 percent increase in violent attacks and hate crimes against LGBT (lesbian/gay/bi-sexual/transgender) individuals. In 2007, Michigan had a 207 percent increase in hate crimes against LGBT individuals.
Hart also said, “Hopefully this can enlighten people of what LGBT and other minorities go through.”
