Ferris provided eye examinations for children
Ferris State University’s Students in Need Eyecare (SINE) program successfully provided free eye examinations and eyeglasses to students of Mesick Consolidated Schools.
The Michigan College of Optometry examined 47 referred students in late September. A total of 37 of children were in need of either a new pair of glasses or a first pair of glasses.
An Academic Service Learning grant of $500 from the university funded the SINE program. The Mesick Lions Club also helped fund the program with a contribution of $880.
In addition to providing eye examinations and glasses to uninsured or ineligible children, the grant offset the cost of closing the University Eye Center for the time during the program.
Increased tuition for upper-level classes
Increased tuition rates will go into effect during the Spring 2014 semester, which begins Jan. 13. On May 10, the Ferris State University Board of Trustees approved new tuition rates for upper-level junior and senior students.
The new rates reflect the added costs of having instructor teaching the higher level classes. Higher-level classes are about 30 percent more costly than lower-level classes.
Michigan residents who attend the main campus in Big Rapids will face five dollar per credit hour increase. Non-Michigan residents will see an eight-dollar increase per credit hour.

Ferris alumna to address women’s health issues
Ferris State University welcomes alumna Nicole Bradford on Oct. 30 to discuss women’s preventive health.
Bradford is an assistant medical director at Muskegon Family Care and is passionate about preventative medicine, women’s health and quality medical care. The event is a part of the Office of Multicultural Student Services’ Virtual Women’s Center Speaker Series and it takes place in the IRC room 120 at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
Bradford will discuss cervical, colon and breast cancer along with STD screenings, birth control, diabetes and hypertension.
Zeta Phi Beta, You Beautiful Black Woman and the National Organization for Women campus chapter co-sponsor the hour-long presentation.

Ferris recognized for excelling in the sciences
Matt Roush of Detroit’s WWJ Newsradio 950 stopped at Ferris State University for his Fall Tech Tour. Roush’s daily WWJ Technology report covers high-tech projects in Michigan.
Roush raved about the science labs at Ferris, both educationally and in terms of research. He noted a project being done at Ferris about how a 50 percent increase in a fruit fly lifespan could be translated into something from which humans could benefit.
